New Castle has landed one of Pennsylvania’s first 12 medical marijuana growing operations

The Department of Health announced the winners of 12 grower/processor permits as part of Pennsylvania’s emerging medical marijuana industry. One was awarded to Washington, D.C.-based Holistic Industries, which in January visited the city to examine a site on Industrial Street.

John Collins, director of the state’s Office of Medical Marijuana, said the department received 457 applications in total, including 177 prospective grower/processors and 280 for dispensaries.

In January, officials estimated the facility could mean 100 to 150 new jobs when fully operational.
