WAYNESBORO – Members of the Skyline Drug Task Force arrested three people this week following a traffic stop, including a man suspected of having a marijuana-grow operation, police reported.

On Wednesday morning, authorities received a call about a suspicious van on Va. 6 near Afton Mountain in Nelson County. The van was later located in Augusta County and an ounce of marijuana was reportedly found in the vehicle, a press release said.

The driver, Gregory J. Ward, 40, of Staunton, and his passenger, 39-year-old Shannon N. Farrar of Stuarts Draft, were both charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

Information from those arrests led the task force to a home in the 2300 block of Afton Mountain Road in Nelson County, where investigators allegedly recovered a half-pound of marijuana along with an illegal indoor marijuana growing operation, according to the press release. Kevin B. Kartheiser, 32, of Afton, was charged with two counts of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and one count of manufacturing marijuana. He was released on a $5,000 bond.

Ward and Farrar are being held without bond at the Middle River Regional Jail in Verona.
